Coaching news

Lesson Pupils achieving success

As the season really gets in to full swing some of our lesson pupils are really starting to find form. These include David Umney who has been working with me through the winter and has now reduced his handicap by 6 shots which we are both delighted with.

More recently I gave a playing lesson to David Ray and we worked on a few areas of his game. This work produced some quick results with David returning a nett 66 in the weekend medal and received a handicap cut.

If your game is not where you want it at this stage of the season and you are lacking some direction speak to Tom or myself and we will arrange some lessons to help you.

Short Game Intensive

If you were not able to attend our Free coaching sessions last week why not join forces with your playing partners and do one of our Short Game intensive coaching sessions.

This is where we will look at your Chipping, Pitching and Bunker Play and again show you the Dave Pelz short Game Handicap practice routine.

The session last 90 minutes and we can take up to 5 people with the cost of the session being £75 or £15pp.

Festival Week Pro-Am - Not Many Places Left

During our Festival week in July we will be running an Invitational Pro-am on Friday, 6 July. The event has an invitational field of professionals including former European Tour Professionals Andrew Marshall and Jaimie Little. We are aiming to make the amateur teams Members only and as such the entry fee is great value at only £105 per team (£35pp).

It will be a 1pm shotgun start with a barbeque afterwards.

Secure your place in the event by talking to one of the Pro shop team and take the opportunity to play with one of the professional field.

The toughest test in golf?

Golf’s second major of the year is upon us and what a fascinating week it’s set to be in New York. Shinnecock Hills plays host to the 118th U.S. Open and it’s the fifth time that the American links has had the honour. The lowest score to date? A meagre four-under-par.

The course is an absolute brute, measuring nearly 7,500 yards and that’s with only two par-fives. One hole that we must pick out is the 252-yard par-three second. If the breeze gets up - and with Shinnecock Hills being a links course near the sea it’s likely to - and the second plays into the wind, will we see a few drivers come out? What a sight that would be!

So who to look out for? Well, keep an eye on Phil Mickelson. Lefty is still searching for the Grand Slam and a win at this week’s U.S. Open would see him finally complete his quest, at a course where he finished second last time out in 2004. Tiger Woods will get a lot of attention as we wait to see if the 14-time major winner can regain his killer instinct on the greens to mount a serious challenge this week. He joins Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson in the standout grouping from rounds one and two.

Oh, and if you weren’t aware, the FIFA World Cup also starts this week. What a choice.

Which 50% are you in?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the key to unlocking lower scores lies in improving your short game. Having the correct technique is one part of the journey to achieving this. The other is making sure your wedges are the correct grind and bounce for your swing, as well as having a set of wedges that are evenly gapped to cater for any distance.

If you’re working hard to get your handicap down, it really will pay off to dedicate more of your practice time to your short game and the shots you need to improve in the scoring zone. As you can see with the graphics above, the wrong wedge set-up can lead to an awkward 35-yard gap and more difficult half shots, which is why we always recommend a gapping session or fitting.
