Outplayed from start to finish

It was a convincing win for the United States over the weekend as they retained the Solheim Cup with a 16.5-11.5 victory in Iowa. The European team found themselves five points behind heading into Sunday’s singles, partly down to a whitewashing in Friday afternoon’s fourballs, but, in the end, they left themselves with too much to do, being outplayed from start to finish.

Watching golf being played in a team format certainly adds a bit of excitement to the game, and hopefully will have prompted a few of you to get back out on the course over the next week or two. With this in mind, we were wondering which time of the day is your favourite to take to the course. Maybe you prefer to tee off early morning and get round before lunch or you might be the opposite and prefer a quiet evening round when you have the course to yourself? Putter counterbalancing: is it for you?

The most recent trend in putter design is counterbalancing. This basically means making the grip end heavier. But what’s the point of it, and could you benefit?

The putting stroke basically asks you to move a light object slowly, and there are plenty of golfers who have trouble controlling that. For these players, the stroke can feel more solid when they feel a little more weight in their hands. For example, you might find it easier to throw a golf ball into a bin 8ft away than you would a table-tennis ball.

So counterbalancing is essentially aimed at people who feel their hands can get busy during the stroke, and it’s no coincidence it’s come along in the wake of the anchoring ban.
