Club championships

The Club Championship went ahead over the weekend with a bumper entry and some fantastic scoring. Jamie Smith emerged as the winner of the scratch with fine rounds of 71 and 69 for a level par total of 140 giving him a five shot victory over Alan Sheridan

In the Nett competition it was Matt Priest who was victorious with a nett score of 135 just pipping Steve Quick

Special mention should go to Hugh McClellan who shot an amazing nett 62 in round one and also to the people who played on Saturday afternoon in the torrential rain.

A big thank you to everyone who made it a great day and congratulations to all who were involved.

Pros news

Captain Pro Qualifier

Gavin and I had a great trip to Surrey last week to play in the PGA Captain Pro Tournament at The Addington Golf Club. We practiced on Wednesday Afternoon and found a very bouncy tight golf course with some very sloping greens.

On the tournament day neither of us unfortunately fired on all cylinders but we would have needed to have played great as -8 was the winning score.

Thought of the week

Drive for show, putt for dough?

This is one of golf's great debates: given the choice, what would you rather be - a great putter or a great driver?

Without wishing to influence your vote - and you can vote below on our website - we'd take a guess that most of you would go with the former; that if you are a confident putter and better than most, your scores will be far greater.

Others may say you could be the best putter in the world, but it counts for nothing if you're chipping out sideways from the fairway rough all day long - therefore accuracy and length off the tee would be preferable.

There's no right or wrong answer, of course, although how good does it feel when you bomb one off the tee? Actually, it feels pretty good when you hole back-to-back 30-foot birdie putts, too.

Vote on what you'd rather be, we'd be interested to know. Vote Now
