Successful week at PGA Pro's Championship
Last week I played in the PGA Pro's championship at The Oxfordshire Resort which I had qualified for earlier in the season at Gog Magog. The course measured at 7450 yards, so as you can imagine I was slightly apprehensive especially with a number of water holes.
I have qualified for this event on four previous occasions and had not made the cut as only 50 and ties get through in a quality field.
Despite a horrible first 7 holes last week, I managed to make the cut for the first time with rounds of 75 and 70 for a +1 total.
Rounds 3 and 4 proved to be a struggle with rounds of 80 and 79 but overall I was pleased particularly on such a menacing course.
Celebrating 19 years
When I opened up the shop on Monday morning after my week at The Oxfordshire it dawned on me that it was my 19th anniversary of starting at the Club. Those years seem to have flown by but it is great to see the Club thriving more than at any other time in that period. The club is a very different place to when I started in 1997 as is my role within it and we both have so much to look forward to in the future.
Bring on the Ryder Cup!
For scheduling reasons, the final Major of the season was on us pretty quickly at the weekend – but the 98th PGA Championship delivered a thrilling finale.
There was a danger that with events in New Jersey coming so soon after The Open at Royal Troon, the tournament wouldn’t have the same buzz, but eventual winner Jimmy Walker and defending champion Jason Day provided a dramatic ending to the Major season.
Day’s stunning approach to 18, which set up eagle put the pressure on Walker, but he held his nerve to capture his first Major title.
So, that’s that. Well, not quite, because we still have the Olympics to look forward to, and no matter what your opinion on that, it will be interesting to see how it pans out.
Then, it’s the big one! It’s less than two months to go until Team Europe takes on the US at Hazeltine National Golf Club. The Americans will have another new Major winner in their side after Walker’s recent triumph, and with Dustin Johnson claiming his first Major this year as well, things are shaping up nicely – it could well be a classic.
